DreamDive Open Lab: Associate Professor Masanori Sakaguchi

DreamDive Open Lab: One Hour with a Researcher
DreamDive hosts an ongoing online series, "DreamDive Open Lab: One Hour with a Researcher," where we invite researchers and practitioners working on sleep, dreams, and the brain for in-depth conversations.
In this session, we were joined by Associate Professor Masanori Sakaguchi from the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (WPI-IIIS), University of Tsukuba, who shared insights from cutting-edge research on sleep, memory, and consciousness.
📝 Research profile ↗️ (external site)We were inspired by his research vision toward developing treatments for intractable neurological disorders, and the discussion also sparked new ideas for DreamDive—especially around the potential applications of dream intervention to mental health.

Key topics we discussed
- Memory processing during sleep and PTSD: Presenting conditioned sounds during non-REM sleep can weaken fear memories. A compelling point is that it enables low-burden intervention during sleep, without requiring conscious awareness.
DreamDive Open Lab is a series where we sit down with researchers for a focused, one-hour conversation.
